Team CIS At Boston University United Nations Conference

Share:

A very proud moment for Chitkara International School as the delegation of 7 students was selected to participate in Boston University Academy Model United Nations conference held at Boston University, Massachusetts, USA. This is a United Nations Conference for middle school-aged students (11-14) hoping to gain a wonderful experience and a unique insight into high school UN conferences. The conference took place from Saturday, February 1, 2014, to Sunday, February 2, 2014, at Boston University campus.
The conference focused on enhancing the experience of middle school delegates and helping them build their Model UN skills. The conference was staffed by members of BUA’s nationally ranked Model UN team, and offered both General Assemblies (GAs) and Crisis Committees, including a Joint Crisis simulation. Throughout the weekend, delegates debated and negotiated in order to represent their positions as accurately as possible. Along the way, they sharpened their skills and gained awareness of what it means to be a global citizen.
There were around 160 students from 14 schools in and around Boston participating in the conference .Team CIS was the only international delegation in the conference which made the experience all the more special for our students and teachers. The conference started with an opening ceremony which had welcome speeches from Natalie Mayer (Director- General) and Joe Walsh (Co- secretary-General ). The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Ambassador Jonathan Moore, Associate at Joan Shorenstein centre for the Press, Politics and Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.
Delegates from Chitkara International School were allotted countries in United Nations Human Resource Committee (UNHRC) and Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) where they had to put forward their views on the topics like Human rights in Tibet, Sweatshop Labour, Human Trafficking etc. The students prepared their position papers and speeches after a rigorous research and understanding of the topics. All the delegates from CIS delegation were well applauded and appreciated for their efforts and inputs during the conference by the Boston University officials. Our faculty members interacted with the officials from Derby Academy, Hingham and Derryfield School, Manchester who were too happy and pleased to see the brilliant performance of the CIS students keeping in mind that this was their maiden experience at an International Conference. The entire Team Boston is overwhelmed by the experience as it is a tremendous platform of learning for all.
Chitkara International School was given a special reference during the closing ceremony for participating in the conference and they invited CIS delegation to come again next year as well. It was indeed an amazing opportunity for the students to have an International exposure and learning at such a level.
Sharing her thoughts on these International conferences, Principal, Mrs Niyati Chitkara said, “It’s amazing to see our students representing different countries at such an International Level. Model United Nation Conferences are part of Chitkara International School’s Global Connect, these conferences promotes student and teacher interest in International relations and related subjects, increase the capacity for students to engage in problem solving, teaches aspects of conflict resolutions, research and communication skills, and create the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends”.
