Chitkara International School unfolds “The Magic of Dabbawalas”

Chitkara International School (CIS) unveiled the “Magic Of Dabbawalas-Unfolded” for its students and school parents. .After Mumbai’s railway line it is Dabbawalas that is the life line of Mumbai. Inviting Dabbawalas for session was part of School Academia Industry Interface, which allows students to know more about different industries (Service Industry, in this case) and look beyond the regular professions.

The session started with the entry of ‘mukadam’ (group leader) on bicycle carrying Dabbas. Subodh B. Sangle, Coordinator & Speaker of Mumbai Dabbawala shared a presentation, which took the audience on a virtual journey which every Dabbawala undertakes on a routine basis. They have no technological back up and error rate of the whole procedure is within those established by the coveted Six Sigma principles.

Students excited after the session asked them questions like “Why don’t you start the same concept in other cities”, answering which they explained that Mumbai local trains are the life lines of this system and they cannot find such reliable public transport system in other cities. Another student asked them “Who all can join their business?” to which they answered, “This system is primarily run by people of varkari samaj but now few people from south India have also joined them and they are open to everyone.”

Commenting on the session, Ms. Niyati Chitkara, Principal, Chitkara International School said, “It’s an honor for us to invite Mumbai Dabbawala for the session .The example of Mahadeo Havaji Bachche and Ananth Mandra Reddy, who initiated an idea of Tiffin delivery system in 1890, will ignite the spirit of entrepreneurship in the kids.”
